Mshauri - Dorothy Mbori-Ngacha
Dr Dorothy Mbori-Ngacha: Senior HIV Specialist on Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (EMTCT) and Paediatric HIV at UNICEF, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatrics AIDS Foundation International Leadership Award (2002). Fogarty Scholar, University of Nairobi Merit Award for Scientific Research on the HIV/AIDS Vaccine #AIDSFreeGeneration #ForEveryChild #EndAIDS #TheLastMile
A champion: Dorothy’s goal and lifelong work has focused on ending paediatric AIDS “We know how children get HIV, we have the tools, now we are in the last mile to end paediatric AIDS.” Trained as a medical doctor and public health specialist in Kenya and the US, specialising in paediatrics and infectious diseases, her research focused on paediatric HIV and the prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. She’s an author on more than 100 scientific publications.
Transitioning to work in public health, where scientific ideas can become actions across an entire country or even the world, she uses the critical mind of a scientist, the voice of an advocate, and the practical experience of a front line healthcare worker to now work at the global level on this same topic
Dorothy works as an advisor (Mshauri is advisor in Kiswahili), policy expert and advocate to strengthen public health programmes in different countries, making sure that mothers living with HIV are getting the treatment they need to stay healthy and avoid passing HIV to their babies, that mothers stay free of HIV, that children and teenagers who have HIV get the medicines they need, and continue taking their HIV medicines.
Working in public health doesn’t just mean working with governments, diagnostic companies need to be guided on how to develop tests that can be done where the children are, (link to point of care testing), pharmaceutical companies need to develop the medicines that are effective for children and are easy for them to take, and there is always a need for advocacy as the better the world does at solving this problem the harder it is to just finish it once and for all and no longer have children who are living with HIV. That this is even possible to talk about says so much about the success of these programmes over the last 20 years, now to finish the job!
Her Heroes: Cathy Wilfert is a pioneer in paediatric HIV research and programs; Wangarĩ Muta Maathai was a renowned Kenyan social, environmental and political activist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Prize. Kenya; Eliud Kipchoge the greatest marathoner alive, “I just find him so inspiring.”
Her Top Tip: “When the work gets a bit tedious just remember that delayed gratification comes with the territory. You will learn more from your failures than from your successes.”

Outside of work (kind of): I love a challenge. I’ve climbed Mount Kenya to Point Lenana (4,985 metres (16,355 ft)) twice. Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. Mountain climbing is a great metaphor for the work that I do in working towards the end of AIDS in children. It’s been a hard climb but we are almost at the summit.
