His Research: I am geologist that looks at the last 5 million years of the Earth’s history with a focus on identifying and explaining past environments that are associated with early human life.
His Heroes: My family and Beyonce! Beyonce is the perfect embodiment of using your talents to be the best version of yourself through working and pushing and growing, while at the same time changing and driving the narratives in society.
His Top Tip: Surround yourself with people you trust and who have the same values as you. Life is a wild ride and the things that will keep you going are love, passion and support.
That Science Spark: I have always grown up in beautiful landscapes (born in Newcastle, KZN) and would wonder how all of it formed and how it shapes the life that lives in it. When I found out these questions could be investigated using geology and palaeontology, I became even more intrigued, particularly when I figured out I could use the combination to understand our own human past and do it in our own backyard of the Cradle of Humankind.
What do you need besides curiosity, hard work, communication, creativity? Passion!

Backsight: I can look at a rock and tell the past through it.
Isotopes: Using the differences in the weights of individual atoms inside minerals in rocks and fossils, I can tell what the climate was at that time. How’s that for a superpower!
