A Champion: Growing up in Heidveld in the Cape Flats, outside of Cape Town, ocean conservation and diving were not on Shamier’s mind - it was a tough neighborhood to say the least. As an adult, just a few years ago, he saw people posting on social media about free diving - diving without SCUBA gear - and asked why not me? (Always a good question to ask). He posted if anyone was doing a course, someone said sure, come with us, and he was hooked. From there, Shamier went on to co-found Sea The Bigger Picture an NGO that visits schools, organises beach clean-ups, and probably, most importantly, gets young people into those cold, but rich, Cape Town waters to see all of the amazing things under the water.
Shamier heard about NEWF, an organisation that helps develop nature and conservation film makers, and submitted a entry about his life and new found passion for the ocean. Again, he asked why not me? And again, he was right. With the help of NEWF and new friends in the filmmaking world he made Rise From The Cape Flats, (here’s a teaser), a story that has been seen on DSTV and film festivals around the world. What’s next for Shamier? Carrying on as an ocean champion -it’s in his blood now- and new and more stories to tell on the big and little screen!
His Heroes: His dad is his number one hero, he worked on the research ship the SA Agulhas I and so it seems the sea is in their blood. Others he admires are Mike Barron of Cape Radd, and Nelson Miranda and Nasreen Peer of Argonaut Science - marine scientists and advocates that teach students and communities how they can get involved in citizen science and marine conservation.
Top Tip: “Don’t let where you come from, or what your situation is, restrict you from achieving your dreams and goals. Work toward it, and work hard at it. Listen to advice and take criticism, always bettering yourself.”
What else do you need do you need besides creativity, communication, hard work, and curiosity? Leadership!
His Superpowers: Breathe underwater - the self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) helps; Paint pictures with words of the ocean depths; Laugh away those ocean fears to get heads underwater and seeing the magic that awaits.
